Tasting Notes

Nose

Apples, pears, tangy citrus peels, runny toffee. Vanilla, creamy grain, warming clove. Berries and pear from the port finishing.

Palate

Chocolate Brazil nuts, a touch of pepper. Caramel, oaken spice. The double port concept — tawny for the 42% malt, ruby for the 58% grain — creates a more nuanced port influence than single-port finishing. Light, elegant, with stone fruits and vanilla.

Finish

Gentle and lingering — the port sweetness fades warmly.

The Liberator Double Port Finish takes an innovative approach — finishing the malt component (42%, from Great Northern and Cooley) in tawny port casks while the grain component (58%) is finished in ruby port casks. The two separately port-finished parcels are then blended, creating a layered port influence from two different wine styles.

The double-port concept adds genuine complexity. Tawny port contributes nutty, oxidative warmth to the malt, while ruby port adds brighter berry fruit to the grain. When blended, the two port styles create something more nuanced than single-port finishing can achieve.

The Liberator Double Port Finish is a well-conceived, innovative Irish whiskey from Wayward Irish Spirits. The double-port approach is more than marketing — it produces a genuinely layered whiskey with port influence from two complementary wine styles. Good value at its price point.
