Teerenpeli Savu Finnish Single Malt Whisky

7.7 /10
EDITOR
Type: Single Malt
ABV: 43%
Price: £49.95

Finland is not the first country that comes to mind when you think of single malt whisky, and that is precisely what makes Teerenpeli Savu worth your attention. The Nordic whisky movement has been gaining serious momentum over the past decade, and Teerenpeli — one of Finland's most established whisky producers — has been at the centre of it. Savu, which translates from Finnish as "smoke," signals its intentions right there on the label. At 43% ABV and carrying no age statement, this is a whisky that asks to be judged on character rather than numbers.

I have long believed that some of the most interesting developments in single malt are happening outside Scotland's borders, and Teerenpeli Savu reinforces that conviction. This is a distillery that has been quietly building a reputation among those of us who pay attention to emerging producers. The decision to release a peated expression under the Savu name shows ambition — smoke is difficult to get right, and getting it wrong is unforgiving. At £49.95, it sits in a competitive bracket where it must stand alongside well-regarded Scotch malts with considerably longer track records.

Tasting Notes

I do not have detailed tasting notes to share for this particular bottling at the time of writing. What I can say is that, given its peated character and 43% ABV, you should expect a whisky that balances smokiness with the lighter, often cereal-forward and slightly fruity profile that Finnish single malts tend to exhibit. Nordic distilleries benefit from dramatic seasonal temperature swings, which can accelerate maturation and produce whiskies with surprising depth for their age. This is a single malt that invites curiosity — go in without preconceptions and let it speak for itself.

The Verdict

I am giving Teerenpeli Savu a score of 7.7 out of 10. This is a genuinely interesting whisky from a producer that deserves wider recognition. The price point is fair for what you are getting — a peated Nordic single malt with real personality. It loses a mark or two simply because, at NAS and 43%, I would have liked to see it bottled at a slightly higher strength to let the smoke and underlying malt really assert themselves. That said, this is a well-made spirit that demonstrates Finland's credentials in the single malt world are no passing trend. If you are the kind of drinker who enjoys exploring beyond the traditional whisky regions, Savu should be on your list.

Best Served

Pour this one neat at room temperature and give it ten minutes in the glass before your first sip — peated whiskies from smaller distilleries often open up considerably with a little air. If you find the smoke a touch assertive, a few drops of water will soften it and coax out whatever malt sweetness sits underneath. A Highball with good soda water and a twist of lemon zest would also work nicely here, particularly in warmer months — the smoke carries well through carbonation, and the lighter ABV means it will not overpower the serve.
