Tasting Notes

Nose

Brine, seaweed, light peat — gingerbread, grapefruit zest, iodine, salty sea air, maritime spray, campfire smoke more than medicinal, touches of dampness and leather

Palate

Sweet and smoky — salt, pepper, celery salt, nougat, moderately oily mouthfeel, then at the back of the mouth an explosion of black pepper that is Talisker's signature, appetising sweetness balancing the heat

Finish

Huge, long, warming — peppery, smoky, clove spice, the Isle of Skye's wild coastline lingering for minutes, one of the longest finishes in Scotch

First Impressions

Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye — Scotland's most dramatic island, where the Cuillin mountains meet the Atlantic. Robert Louis Stevenson called Talisker 'the king o' drinks'. The 10 Year Old is the flagship: bottled at 45.8%, a strength that retains every bit of Skye's wild, maritime, peppery character. The classic island single malt.

Tasting

The nose is brine, seaweed, and light peat with gingerbread and grapefruit zest. On the palate at 45.8%, sweet and smoky with salt, pepper, and nougat. Then at the back of the mouth — Talisker's signature explosion of black pepper. The finish is huge, long, and warming with pepper and clove.

The Verdict

Talisker 10 earns a 9 — the king o' drinks. The peppery explosion is unlike any other whisky, and the 45.8% carries the maritime character with full authority. At £38, world-class Scotch from Skye's only distillery. Essential.
