Tasting Notes

Nose

Light and fragrant — vanilla, orange blossom. Greater depth reveals caramel, ground hazelnut, honey and fragrant roasted spices. More interesting than budget grain whiskies usually offer.

Palate

Mild on the tongue with a slight burn at the end. Cinnamon-dusted oats, honey, vanilla and spice. A nice, light style with a hint of caramel. Decent body and deeply toasted spice.

Finish

Honey sweetness and toasted spice linger. A composed close.

Strathcolm 12 Year Old is a single grain Scotch whisky bottled by Angus Dundee under the Alistair Forfar brand. Aged for twelve years and bottled at 40%, it presents aged grain whisky as a genuine category worth exploring rather than a blending component to be hidden.

The twelve years of maturation give the grain spirit genuine character. The floral nose and the honeyed, spiced palate demonstrate that grain whisky, properly aged, can develop flavour and complexity. A silver medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition validates the quality.

Strathcolm 12 is a good introduction to aged grain whisky — light, floral and approachable, with the twelve years adding genuine depth beyond the neutral, characterless grain that many drinkers associate with the category. At its modest price, it offers excellent value for an age-statement grain.
