Tasting Notes

Nose

Orange bitters, fresh teak, furniture polish. Milk chocolate, strong hessian notes, menthol, cigar smoke and forest fruits. A nose of extraordinary complexity from the exclusive sherry maturation.

Palate

Knackered old leather, tobacco, hazelnut praline. A sliver of diesel adds an industrial element. Pepper, something mentholated, dark soy, wood smoke. Bitter chocolate. At 46%, the flavours arrive with composed authority.

Finish

Dark, sherried and smoky — the Campbeltown character threading through the rich oloroso influence. Long and deeply satisfying.

Springbank 15 Year Old is matured exclusively in ex-oloroso sherry casks — the only expression in the core Springbank range to use sherry-only maturation. The fifteen years of exclusive sherry aging, combined with Springbank's characteristic 2.5 times distillation and gentle peating, creates one of Campbeltown's richest and most rewarding drams.

The all-sherry maturation gives the 15 a character quite different from the bourbon/sherry split of the 10 and 12 Cask Strength. The oloroso dominates — dark fruit, chocolate, leather, tobacco — but the Springbank maritime character and gentle peat assert themselves through the sherry, adding a briny, smoky dimension that purely sherried Speyside malts cannot achieve.

The 2024 release has been described as fantastic by reviewers, and if you prefer heavily sherried whisky in general, or Springbank in particular, this is an easy winner. At 46%, unchill-filtered and natural colour, the presentation is honest. One of Campbeltown's finest regular releases, and a whisky that rewards both casual enjoyment and serious contemplation.
