Tasting Notes

Nose

Cured meat, clove, mint, iodine, almonds, leather, tropical fruits, stewed tea, brine, and peat.

Palate

Rounded and rich — tropical fruits, sherry, caramel, pipe tobacco, wood smoke, raisins, figs, marzipan, and warming spice.

Finish

Long, creamy, and robust — oak, leather, lingering smokiness, and a wisp of sea salt.

If the 10 Year Old is Springbank's handshake and the 12 Year Old Cask Strength is its bear hug, the 15 is the long conversation over dinner. Matured entirely in sherry casks — a departure from the 10's bourbon-sherry split — and bottled at 46%, it is the most overtly sherried expression in the core range and the most divisive within the Springbank faithful.

The sherry influence here is considerable. Fifteen years in good wood has produced a whisky where dried fruit, nut, and spice dominate the conversation, with Springbank's signature maritime peat providing a savoury counterpoint. It is a more complex, more demanding dram than the 10, requiring patience and attention to reveal its layers.

The nose is deep and complex: cured meat, barbecued beef jerky, clove, mint, iodine, almonds, coconut, soft leather, tropical fruits, and stewed black tea, with hints of brine and peat. The palate is rounded and rich — tropical fruits, sherry, caramel, pipe tobacco, wood smoke, raisins, figs, marzipan, vanilla, and warming spice. The interplay between sherry sweetness and maritime salt is Springbank at its most eloquent.

The finish is long, creamy, and robust: oak, leather, lingering smokiness, and a signature wisp of sea salt. It is not the easiest Springbank to love — the sherry can overwhelm if you approach it expecting the 10's clean fruitiness — but for those willing to meet it on its own terms, it is one of the most rewarding whiskies Campbeltown produces.
