Tasting Notes

Nose

Powerful — dunnage funk, toasted hazelnuts, freshly turned earth. Green apple skin, fresh melon and red berries. Bourbon sweetness of lemon drizzle cake, brown sugar and fizzy cola bottles. Toffee and caramel beneath. A nose that could occupy an entire evening.

Palate

Explosive — salted caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, dark chocolate, cinnamon. Lots of dry earth and twigs showing off the underlying peat smoke. The 2.5 times distillation gives it that characteristic Springbank weight and texture. At 57.2%, magnificent intensity.

Finish

Long and warming — dried fruits, salted caramel and soft peat smoke. Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and a touch of oak tannins. The maritime brine threads through everything.

Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 25, released in 2024, continues one of Scotland's most anticipated annual series. Matured in 70% bourbon casks and 30% sherry casks, bottled at 57.2% on 6th May 2024, it presents the full Springbank character at the strength the casks deliver — no dilution, no filtration, no colouring.

The cask strength format is the key. At 57.2%, every element of Springbank's complex character is amplified — the maritime brine, the gentle peat, the salted caramel sweetness, the earthy complexity. The 70/30 bourbon-sherry split provides both the vanilla sweetness of American oak and the dried fruit richness of Spanish wood, and the 2.5 times distillation gives the spirit its characteristic weight.

Batch 25 has been rated 88.63/100 on Whiskybase, and reviewers describe it as 'really, really good.' The consistency of quality across twenty-five annual batches is one of Scotch whisky's most remarkable achievements. Each release varies subtly in proof and character, but the standard remains relentlessly excellent. One of the greatest annual releases in Scottish whisky, from one of its greatest distilleries.
