Spearhead is a single grain Scotch whisky from Loch Lomond Distillery — made unusually from 100% malted barley (rather than the wheat or corn typically used for grain whisky) with a 92-hour extended fermentation, distilled in a Coffey still, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in infrared-toasted American oak casks.
The production process is distinctive. The 100% malted barley gives the grain spirit more cereal character than wheat-based grain, the extended fermentation develops more fruity esters, and the infrared-toasted finishing adds a flavour dimension that conventional toasting cannot achieve. The result is a grain whisky of unusual character — fruity, sweet, with genuine interest.
Spearhead is one of the more characterful single grain whiskies available. The unusual production choices — malted barley, extended fermentation, infrared finishing — create something with more personality than the typically neutral grain category. Good for sipping and mixing, with enough character to stand alone.
