The 18 Year Old is the premium expression in the Seaweed & Aeons range, and it represents a significant step up from the standard 10 Year Old. Eighteen years of maturation has allowed the Islay peat to integrate with the sherry cask influence in a way that the younger expression can only approximate, producing a whisky of real depth and complexity.
A generous portion of the vatting is sherry cask matured, imparting layers of poached stone fruits and candied nuts to the dense, bold peat smoke. Bottled at cask strength — around 54.7% ABV — without chill filtration or colouring, the 18 has the weight and intensity that the standard 40% bottling lacks.
The nose is mature and contemplative: warm tar, earthy bonfire ash, burnt biscuits, juicy grilled stone fruits, polished oak, anise, and vanilla. The palate is dense and layered — charcoal, coffee grounds, cacao, barbecued meat, herbaceous peat, smoked sea salt, and sweet sherried fruit. The eighteen years have softened the peat into something elegant rather than aggressive.
The finish is glorious: peat smoke and sherried oak, bonfire embers, burnt seaweed, sticky dates, vanilla shortbread, and grilled peach. It is a whisky that delivers on every note its name promises, and the extra age has transformed those notes from descriptors into a fully realised experience. At its price point, it competes with named Islay 18-year-olds and holds its own.
