Tasting Notes

Nose

Balanced peat and sherry in comfortable cohabitation.

Palate

Surprisingly forceful — sherry alongside smoke, red apple sweetness, and unexpected warmth.

Finish

Elegant — red apple, oaken vanilla, fading into chargrilled ember warmth.

This was Master of Malt's best-selling bottle in 2023, and the reason is simple: it offers Islay single malt character at a price that undercuts most of the island's official bottlings. The 10 Year Old is the standard expression in the range — an Islay malt from an undisclosed distillery, with 25% finished in first-fill oloroso sherry octaves, bottled at 40%.

The naming convention — describing what the whisky tastes like rather than where it comes from — is a clever piece of marketing from Atom Brands. Seaweed, deep time, peat earth, and fire: the four flavour pillars of Islay whisky, distilled into a title. Whether the source is Caol Ila, Bowmore, or another island distillery is beside the point; the liquid speaks for itself.

The nose is well-balanced: peat and sherry in comfortable cohabitation, with neither dominating. The palate is surprisingly forceful for 40% — the sherry makes itself known alongside the smoke, with red apple sweetness and a warmth that belies the modest strength. The integration between peat and oloroso is well-managed, the sweet sherry softening the smoke without extinguishing it.

The finish is elegant: red apple sweetness giving way to oaken vanilla before fading into chargrilled ember warmth. It is not the most complex Islay whisky on the market, but it may be the best value. For drinkers who want good Islay single malt without the premium of an age statement from a named distillery, this is the bottle.
