Tasting Notes

Nose

Sweet and grainy — freshly milled malt, porridge, lemon zest. Orange peel, redcurrants, a hint of woody spice. The sherry-cask component from Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes adds genuine richness.

Palate

Opens sweetly with dry sherry taking the lead. Malty vanilla with orange zest. Transitions into spiced and vegetal notes. Oily, rich — porridge, lemon sherbet, stewed apples with cinnamon, caraway seeds.

Finish

Medium — apples, apple skin, spice, pastry cases.

Scallywag is Douglas Laing's Speyside blended malt — combining single malts from Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes, predominantly matured in Spanish sherry barrels. Named for Master Blender Fred Laing's beloved fox terrier, it is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colour.

The sherry influence is the defining character. All component malts have been mainly sherry-matured, giving Scallywag a consistently fruit-forward, spicy character. The Mortlach component adds weight and meatiness, the Macallan contributes sherry richness, and the Glenrothes provides fruit and elegance.

Scallywag is one of the best-value sherried Speyside blends available. The quality of the component malts — Mortlach, Macallan, Glenrothes — would cost considerably more as individual bottlings, and Douglas Laing's honest presentation at 46% gives the sherry influence full expression. The fox terrier on the bottle is charming; the liquid inside is genuinely good.
