Tasting Notes

Nose

Caramel, vanilla, dark fruit, toasted oak and a hint of leather.

Palate

Full-bodied — toffee, dried cherry, baking spice, roasted nuts and warm oak char.

Finish

Long, oak-driven, with caramel, cocoa and a peppery glow.

Pure Kentucky XO is one of those bottles that quietly rewards anyone willing to look beyond the brightest labels on the bourbon shelf. Bottled by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers — the Willett family operation in Bardstown — at a generous 107 proof, it sits in the middle of the KBD small-batch family: stronger than Rowan's Creek and Johnny Drum, gentler than Noah's Mill, and arguably the most balanced of the four.

The nose is classic Kentucky in sepia tones. Caramel and vanilla lead, dark fruit drifts up behind them, and toasted oak provides the architecture. Spend a moment with the glass and a faint leather note appears, the kind that hints at well-aged stock without ever turning into a costume. There is no rough alcohol bite even at this proof — just a deep, settled warmth.

On the palate Pure Kentucky XO arrives full-bodied and confident. Toffee and dried cherry lead, baking spice rolls across the middle, and a roasted-nut note adds welcome savouriness before warm oak char closes the act. The mouthfeel is thick without being heavy, and the spirit holds together beautifully neat. A drop of water teases out more vanilla and a delicate orange-peel sparkle.

The finish is long, oak-driven and gently peppery, with caramel and cocoa trading off as the heat slowly recedes. It is a finish built for slow evenings — the kind that asks you to put the glass down between sips and think about what you just tasted.

Pure Kentucky XO is grown-up bourbon at a fair price, and another quiet triumph from the KBD small-batch family.
