First Impressions
Paul John Bold brings the peat without losing Goa's tropical signature. Bottled at 46% and non-chill-filtered, it pours golden and opens with a confident smoky sweetness.
Distillery & Heritage
John Distilleries' Paul John single malts are made in Goa using Indian six-row barley — an unusual choice that gives the spirit an oilier, more intense character than Scotch two-row. Maturation happens near the Arabian Sea where humidity and warmth drive rapid interaction with ex-bourbon casks. Bold uses peated malt imported from Scotland.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose opens on sweet peat, honeycomb and mango, with iodine and toasted almond underneath. The palate is rounded and honeyed — smoked honey, vanilla cream, dark chocolate and peppered orange peel, with ashy peat threading through. The finish dries out gracefully with cocoa, citrus oil and embers.
Verdict
Bold by name and bold by nature — an Indian peated malt that holds its own against mid-range Islay bottlings while offering a genuinely different flavor profile.
