Tasting Notes

Nose

Sea spray, orange peel, honey, vanilla cream, tangerine, apricot jam, hints of smoke and campfire — coastal and warm

Palate

Salted caramel, dried fruit, brine, butterscotch, raisin, cinnamon, a slightly meaty quality with fresh citrus juice — the Montilla Fino adding depth

Finish

Long and sweet — black pepper heat, lingering dark fruit, the rare dry sherry finish distinguishing it from PX-finished releases

First Impressions

Oban Distillers Edition — one of the best value releases in Diageo's Classic Malts Distillers Edition range. Double matured with a Montilla Fino sherry cask finish — a rare dry Spanish sherry. Oban distillery was established 1794 on the West Highland coast, using just two stills.

The Montilla Fino Difference

While most Distillers Editions use PX or Oloroso sherry, Oban uses Montilla Fino — a dry rather than sweet sherry. This adds dark fruit without cloying sweetness, preserving the coastal-maritime character. A meaningful upgrade over the standard Oban 14. 43%.

Tasting

Sea spray and orange peel nose with apricot jam. Salted caramel palate with dried fruit, brine, and cinnamon. Long, sweet finish with black pepper heat. Exceptional balance between coast and sherry.

The Verdict

Oban Distillers Edition earns an 8 — the rare dry sherry finish sets it apart from sweeter Distillers Editions. At £68, a meaningful upgrade over the standard 14. One of Diageo's most constrained distilleries producing one of its finest special releases.
