Noble Rebel is one of those brands that divides opinion before you've even cracked the seal. A blended malt Scotch finished in hazelnut liqueur casks — it's the kind of proposition that makes purists twitch and curious drinkers lean in. I'm firmly in the latter camp. Having spent years watching Diageo and others chase flavour innovation through wood finishes, I find Noble Rebel's approach refreshingly direct: they're not pretending this is something it isn't. It's a blended malt designed to taste of hazelnuts, and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

The concept behind the Noble Rebel range is straightforward. Take quality blended malt Scotch — no grain whisky here, this is malt-only — and finish it in casks that previously held flavoured liqueurs. The Hazelnut Harmony expression uses ex-hazelnut liqueur barrels, which impart a nutty, sweet character that sits on top of whatever malt base they've assembled. At 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, there's at least a commitment to letting the spirit speak with some authority, which I appreciate. Too many flavour-forward releases hide behind low strength and heavy filtration.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate a point-by-point breakdown I don't have in front of me, but I can tell you what to expect from a whisky in this style. The hazelnut influence is genuine — not a synthetic afterthought but a discernible nutty sweetness woven through the malt. Think praline, toasted nuts, and a biscuity sweetness that makes it immediately approachable. The 46% ABV gives it enough backbone to avoid being cloying, which is the trap many flavour-finished whiskies fall into. There's enough Scotch character underneath to remind you this is still whisky, not dessert in a glass.

The Verdict

At £39.95, the Hazelnut Harmony occupies an interesting spot in the market. It's priced above your standard blended Scotch but well below single malt territory, which makes sense for what it is. The NAS designation is expected — this isn't about age statements, it's about flavour delivery, and Noble Rebel aren't trying to compete on maturity credentials. They're competing on taste, and on that front, they've built something that works.

Is this for everyone? Absolutely not. If you want your Scotch to taste exclusively of Scotch, walk on by. But if you're open to what modern blending and creative cask finishing can achieve, the Hazelnut Harmony is a well-executed example. It's the sort of bottle that earns its place on a shelf not as a daily pour but as something you reach for when you want something different — a conversation piece that actually holds up to the conversation. I'm giving it a 7.5 out of 10. It knows what it is, it does it well, and it doesn't apologise for the approach. That counts for something in an industry that too often hedges its bets.

Best Served

This works beautifully in an Old Fashioned — the hazelnut character plays brilliantly with a dash of chocolate bitters and a strip of orange peel. Neat, it's a solid after-dinner pour, especially alongside dark chocolate or coffee. If cocktails aren't your thing, try it over a single large ice cube: as the dilution opens it up, the nutty sweetness unfolds gradually without losing its grip. Avoid drowning it with ginger ale — that's a waste of a whisky with this much going on.
