First Impressions
Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt from William Grant & Sons — combining Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie into one accessible whisky. The name comes from the arm strain injury malt shovellers sustained turning malted barley by hand — their arms hanging lower, resembling 'monkey shoulders'. Matured in ex-bourbon casks for sweetness and consistency.
Tasting
The nose is citrus and red apple with spices and spearmint. On the palate at 43%, sweet creamy fruit with cinnamon, vanilla, and green pepper. The finish is short, clean, and lightly sweet.
The Verdict
Monkey Shoulder earns a 7 — designed for cocktails but standing well on its own. Three Speyside malts creating something greater than the sum. At £26, the best value blended malt for mixing and sipping alike.
