Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich sherry — raisin, fig, dark chocolate. A generous and complex nose that would not be out of place on a sherried Scotch. Beneath the dried fruit, malt, walnut and a hint of espresso. Polished and confident.

Palate

Full-bodied and sherried — dried fruit, dark toffee, a gentle tannic grip. The 12 years in oloroso sherry casks have given the whisky genuine depth and maturity. Mid-palate brings roasted almond, dark chocolate and a warming spice. The malt base is robust enough to hold its own against the assertive wood.

Finish

Long, with sherry warmth, dark fruit and a lingering chocolate sweetness.

Zuidam Distillers is a family-owned operation in Baarle-Nassau, North Brabant, founded by Fred van Zuidam in 1975. Originally a genever and liqueur producer, the distillery began making single malt whisky in the late 1990s under the Millstone brand, and the results have consistently surprised and impressed whisky enthusiasts who discover them. The 12 Year Old Sherry Cask is perhaps the finest expression of what this small Dutch distillery can achieve.

The whisky is matured entirely in oloroso sherry casks, and the influence is generous without being overwhelming. Twelve years — a significant age for a non-Scottish single malt — have given the spirit time to integrate fully with the wood, creating a whisky that competes credibly with sherried Scotch malts at similar or higher price points. The malt base, distilled in traditional copper pot stills, has enough character and weight to stand up to the sherry influence.

Millstone 12 Year Old Sherry Cask is one of the best-kept secrets in world whisky. It demonstrates that the Netherlands — historically a genever-producing nation — is capable of making single malt whisky of genuine quality and distinction. At 46% and non-chill-filtered, it is bottled with the same care and respect for the spirit that the best Scottish distilleries apply. For sherried whisky enthusiasts willing to look beyond Scotland, this is an essential and rewarding discovery.
