There are few names in American whiskey that carry quite the weight of Michter's. The US*1 Original Sour Mash Whiskey sits as the entry point to their core range, and it's a bottle I find myself returning to with genuine regularity — not out of obligation, but because it consistently delivers something that a surprising number of pricier expressions fail to: character without complication.

At 43% ABV, this is bottled just above the standard 40% floor, and that modest bump matters. It gives the whiskey enough backbone to stand up in a glass without overwhelming the drinker. This is a sour mash expression — a process where a portion of previously fermented mash is carried over into the next batch, lending consistency and a particular depth of grain character. It's a method with deep roots in American distilling, and Michter's has built much of their reputation on getting it right.

The NAS (no age statement) designation will raise eyebrows among those who fixate on numbers, but I'd urge patience. What Michter's has done here is prioritise flavour profile over age, selecting barrels that hit a particular standard rather than a particular birthday. It's an approach I respect when the results justify it — and here, they do.

What to Expect

Without specific tasting notes to dissect on this occasion, I'll speak to the broader style. Michter's Sour Mash occupies a space that's distinctly American but remarkably approachable. Expect warmth without burn, a certain roundness that speaks to careful barrel selection, and a finish that doesn't outstay its welcome. This is a whiskey that rewards attention but doesn't demand it — equally at home as a contemplative evening pour or the foundation of a well-built cocktail.

The sour mash category itself is sometimes misunderstood. It's not a flavour descriptor so much as a production method, and the resulting whiskey can range enormously in character. Michter's version leans towards the refined end of that spectrum — polished, balanced, and deliberately crafted to be versatile.

The Verdict

At £61.75, the Michter's US*1 Original Sour Mash sits at a price point that asks you to take it seriously, and I think it earns that ask. This isn't a bargain-bin mixer, nor is it priced into collector territory. It's a working whiskey — one that performs reliably and rewards the drinker who pays attention. A score of 7.7 out of 10 reflects a bottle that does almost everything well, with genuine craft behind it and enough personality to distinguish itself on a crowded shelf. Where it loses that final fraction is in the lack of a truly memorable signature moment — it's consistently good rather than occasionally extraordinary. But consistency, in whiskey as in life, is an undervalued virtue.

Best Served

I'd take this neat at room temperature first, to get the full measure of what's in the glass. If you find the 43% carries any bite for your palate, a few drops of water will open it up without diminishing it. Beyond that, this is a genuinely excellent Highball whiskey — the structure holds beautifully against good soda water with a twist of lemon peel. For warmer evenings, that's my recommendation without hesitation.
