Mars Maltage Cosmo World is one of those bottles that tends to catch your eye on the shelf before you know quite what you're looking at. It's a blended malt from Mars Shinshu — one of Japan's smaller, more quietly ambitious distilleries, nestled in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. The "Cosmo" name gestures at something expansive, and while marketing language is marketing language, there's genuine ambition in what Mars have been doing with their malt whisky programme over the past decade. This is a distillery that spent years in semi-dormancy before recommitting to production, and bottles like this represent the fruits of that renewed effort.

At 43% ABV and carrying no age statement, Cosmo World sits in that pragmatic sweet spot that Japanese producers have increasingly occupied — using vatting skill rather than age to build character. It's a blended malt, meaning no grain whisky here; this is malt-on-malt, which at this price point is worth noting. The NAS designation shouldn't put you off. Mars have been thoughtful about their wood management and blending approach, and the lack of a number on the label is as much about flexibility as it is about stock constraints.

What you're getting with Cosmo World is a whisky that leans into the lighter, more approachable end of Japanese malt whisky. It's built for drinkability rather than drama. There's a softness and a roundness to the style that speaks to careful cask selection, and at 43% it's got just enough body to hold your attention without demanding it. This is a weeknight whisky in the best possible sense — something you reach for because it's reliably satisfying, not because you're trying to have an experience.

Tasting Notes

I'll be honest: I'm not going to dress this up with invented flavour descriptors. What I can tell you is that Mars Shinshu's house style tends toward the delicate and cereal-forward, with a gentle sweetness that distinguishes it from the bigger, more sherried expressions coming out of some of Japan's larger operations. Expect something clean, well-integrated, and easy to drink. If you're coming from Scotch, think closer to a lighter Speyside than anything from Islay.

The Verdict

At £52.25, Cosmo World is priced competitively for a Japanese blended malt — and considerably below the eye-watering territory that some NAS Japanese bottles have drifted into. You're paying a fair price for a well-made whisky from a producer with genuine craft credentials. It's not going to rewrite your understanding of what whisky can be, but that's not the point. This is a solid, well-constructed blend that does what it sets out to do with quiet confidence. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 — a genuine recommendation, particularly for anyone curious about Japanese whisky beyond the usual Suntory and Nikka suspects. Mars deserve more attention than they get, and this is a fine place to start.

Best Served

This is a natural candidate for a Japanese-style highball. Good ice, chilled soda water, a generous pour, and a twist of lemon peel if you're feeling it. The lighter body and clean profile come alive with a bit of dilution and fizz — it's how a lot of Japanese whisky is actually consumed, and Cosmo World takes to it beautifully. That said, it's perfectly pleasant neat at room temperature if you want to take your time with it.
