Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich sherry, dried fruit, dark chocolate. The all-oloroso maturation gives the nose a depth and richness that the Double Cask cannot match. Raisin, dark toffee, a gentle spice. Beneath the sherry, malt and a touch of orange peel. Classic Macallan.

Palate

Full and sherried — dried fruit, chocolate, a gentle oak spice. The exclusive sherry maturation provides a richness and depth that has made Macallan one of the world's most valuable whisky brands. Mid-palate brings roasted nut, a gentle warmth and a satisfying mouthfeel. At 43%, smooth and polished.

Finish

Long, with sherry warmth and dried fruit sustaining elegantly.

The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Year Old is the expression that built the Macallan legend. Matured exclusively in oloroso sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez, it represents the traditional Macallan style — rich, sherried, with a depth and complexity that established the distillery as one of the most prestigious in Scotch whisky. The Sherry Oak range is the older, more exclusive sibling of the Double Cask line.

The exclusive sherry maturation makes a significant difference compared to the Double Cask (which combines sherry and bourbon wood). The Sherry Oak is richer, darker and more intensely sherried, with a depth of dried fruit and chocolate that bourbon barrels cannot provide. The twelve years of maturation in quality oloroso casks have produced a whisky of genuine class.

Macallan Sherry Oak 12 carries a premium that its marketing budget has inflated beyond what the liquid alone might justify. But the liquid is genuinely good — a well-made, richly sherried Speyside malt that delivers on the promise of exclusive sherry maturation. For drinkers willing to pay the Macallan premium, the Sherry Oak 12 is a more characterful and satisfying whisky than its Double Cask counterpart. The traditional Macallan, and still the best way to understand what the distillery is about.
