Tasting Notes

Nose

Toffee, dried fruits — figs, dates, sultanas — orange zest, cinnamon, eggnog, brandy-soaked fruits, sweet oak, vanilla — unmistakably Macallan

Palate

Silky and soft — red and black berries, jammy marmalade, dark chocolate, stem ginger, raisins, toffee, well-integrated oak — the 18 years of sherry maturation fully expressed

Finish

Long and drawn out — biscuity, nutty, charred oak, lingering sherry, caramel, oak spices — a finish that lasts for minutes

First Impressions

Macallan 18 Sherry Oak — the most iconic expression from the world's most valuable single malt brand. Distilled at Easter Elchies House in Speyside since 1824, Macallan's commitment to 100% sherry oak maturation defined its identity for decades. This continues that tradition.

The Sherry Obsession

Matured exclusively in hand-picked European oak casks seasoned with sherry wine from Jerez, Spain. The Edrington Group controls the entire cask supply chain, from Spanish oak forests to Jerez bodegas. Annual releases (2023, 2024 editions) ensure consistency while reflecting vintage character. The cask programme is among the most expensive in Scotch whisky.

Tasting

Toffee and dried fruit nose — figs, dates, sultanas — with brandy-soaked fruit richness. Silky palate of red and black berries with dark chocolate, stem ginger, and marmalade. The finish is long and drawn out — biscuity, nutty, with charred oak and lingering sherry.

The Verdict

Macallan 18 Sherry Oak earns an 8.5 — the quality is genuinely excellent, the sherry maturation perfectly expressed after 18 years. At £340, it's significantly overpriced relative to comparable sherry-matured malts, but Macallan has earned its premium through decades of consistency. One of Scotch whisky's definitive experiences.
