Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich and buttery — creamy toffee, salted caramel, sweet figs, dates, chewy raisins, mandarin, brown sugar, the Oloroso sherry cask influence unmistakable

Palate

Sweet and full — sherry, plums, powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, silky round mouthfeel, not overly complex but satisfying, the exclusive sherry maturation providing rich dried fruit character

Finish

Medium — sweet and oaky, sherry reappearing with caramel and milk chocolate, the classic Macallan signature in the warm close

First Impressions

The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 — first released in 2004 — is exclusively matured in hand-selected Oloroso sherry-seasoned oak casks. Macallan commissions the seasoning of casks for a full two years in Spain before filling. The standard that defined sherry-matured Scotch.

Tasting

The nose is buttery toffee with figs and raisins. On the palate at 40%, sweet sherry with plums and cinnamon in a silky mouthfeel. The finish is sweet and oaky.

The Verdict

Macallan 12 Sherry Oak earns an 8 — the absolute classic. At current prices it faces serious competition, but the exclusive sherry maturation still produces a whisky of genuine pedigree. At £65, the Easter Elchies standard.
