Tasting Notes

Nose

Caramel, tropical fruit, toasted oak. Fresh-cut hay and green grass. A youthful nose with genuine character despite the NAS positioning.

Palate

Green notes mixed with honey sweetness and vanilla. Fresh herbs, fruity notes, cereal. Hints of bitter chocolate with pepper and ginger. Delicate peat and smoke in the background. Some alcohol heat — water softens and reveals more nuttiness.

Finish

Short — pepper and lemon peel. The finish is Loch Lomond Original's weakness.

Loch Lomond Original is the entry point to Scotland's most versatile distillery — a no-age-statement peated single malt matured in American oak and presented at 46%. The distillery's unique combination of traditional pot stills and Lomond stills allows it to produce both peated and unpeated styles from a single site.

The peat is gentle — more Highland campfire than Islay kiln — with green, herbal notes and a tropical fruitiness that the Lomond stills contribute. At 46% and NAS, the whisky shows some young, raw edges, but the grain character is genuine and the honey-vanilla sweetness provides a pleasant foundation.

At £25, Loch Lomond Original is one of the most affordable single malts at a decent ABV. The quality is modest but genuine, and the gentle peat adds interest. A functional everyday Highland malt at a democratic price.
