Tasting Notes

Nose

Butter cream icing, coastal sea air, s'mores. Smoky BBQ sauce, crème brûlée. The cask strength gives the classic Laphroaig medicinal peat full, vivid expression. Band-aid, woodfire, sea brine.

Palate

Barbecue beef, brown sugar, medium-roast Arabian coffee. Sea salt, chilli spice, tobacco. The cask strength reveals a sweetness and complexity that the standard 10 at 40% cannot show. Massive and peaty yet balanced by malt sweetness.

Finish

Very long — peat smoke, maritime salt, a lingering medicinal warmth. The full strength sustains the Islay character magnificently.

Laphroaig Cask Strength is released in annual batches, each at whatever proof the bourbon barrels deliver — typically between 56% and 60%. Non-chill-filtered and presented without dilution, it is Laphroaig at its most uncompromising and, for many devotees, its most rewarding.

The cask strength format transforms the Laphroaig 10 experience. The medicinal peat, iodine and seaweed that define the standard bottling are amplified to vivid, three-dimensional intensity. But the real revelation is the sweetness — at cask strength, a malt sweetness emerges that the diluted version completely hides. This duality of intense peat and hidden sweetness is what makes Laphroaig Cask Strength one of the great Islay expressions.

Each batch varies in proof and subtle character, but the quality has been remarkably consistent across nearly twenty releases. At barely more than the standard 10's price, the Cask Strength offers dramatically more flavour, complexity and intensity. For peat lovers, it is essential. For the curious, it is the fullest expression of what Islay peat means.
