Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich caramel, dark fruit, polished oak. The blending expertise shows in a nose of unusual depth and harmony. Beneath the sweetness, vanilla, leather and a gentle spice. Composed and inviting.

Palate

Rich and well-blended — dark caramel, dried cherry, a gentle oak spice. The blend of multiple bourbon stocks creates a whiskey with more complexity than most single-source offerings. Mid-palate brings brown sugar, roasted nut and a gentle warmth. Well-balanced at 96.4 proof.

Finish

Long, with dark caramel and oak sustaining elegantly.

Kentucky Owl was originally a bourbon brand produced by C.M. Dedman in the late nineteenth century — its production was 'confiscated' during Prohibition, inspiring the name of this modern release. The brand was revived by Dixon Dedman — C.M. Dedman's great-great-grandson — and has been assembled by master blender John Rhea, who selects and blends bourbon stocks from multiple Kentucky sources.

The 'Confiscated' release is Kentucky Owl's core expression — a blend of bourbons of various ages and styles, assembled to showcase Rhea's blending expertise. The result is a bourbon of genuine complexity, with layers of dark fruit, caramel and oak that reflect the breadth of the component stocks. Each batch is unique, though the quality has been consistently excellent.

Kentucky Owl Confiscated is a premium bourbon that justifies its price through quality of blending rather than age statement or distillery provenance. The family heritage adds romance, and John Rhea's expertise adds substance. At its price point, it competes with some of Kentucky's most celebrated releases, and it holds its own.
