Tasting Notes

Nose

Honey, vanilla, a gentle complexity. Layers of grain and malt interweave — bourbon sweetness, Scotch maltiness, Japanese precision. A touch of citrus and a faint floral quality. The nose unfolds slowly, revealing new details with each return.

Palate

Smooth and layered — caramel, stone fruit, a gentle spice. The blending of whiskies from Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the United States creates a palate that is genuinely international — familiar elements assembled in an unfamiliar way. Mid-palate brings malt, toffee and a subtle oak warmth.

Finish

Medium-long, with a gentle sweetness and a clean, balanced warmth that reflects the precision of the blending.

Ichiro Akuto is one of the most respected figures in Japanese whisky. The grandson of the founder of the Hanyu distillery, he rescued casks from the closed distillery and created the legendary 'Playing Card' series before establishing his own Chichibu distillery in 2008. Malt & Grain is his most accessible release — a 'world blend' that combines malt and grain whiskies from Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the United States into a whisky that is greater than any geographical classification can contain.

The blending is exceptional. Akuto's skill lies in marrying disparate whiskies — each with its own character and national identity — into something coherent and harmonious. The bourbon sweetness, Scotch maltiness, Irish smoothness, Canadian lightness and Japanese precision all contribute to a whole that is distinctly Ichiro's — balanced, complex and meticulously assembled. At 46.5%, the whisky has enough strength to carry its complexity.

Ichiro's Malt & Grain is proof that blending is an art form, regardless of national boundaries. In a market where provenance and single-origin purity dominate the conversation, this whisky makes a quiet but persuasive argument for the blender's perspective — that the right whiskies, combined in the right proportions by the right hands, can achieve something that no single distillery can match alone. A world whisky in the truest sense, and one of the most consistently satisfying blends available.
