Tasting Notes

Nose

Dark sherry, dried fruit, dark chocolate. Richer and darker than the standard 12, with the increased first-fill sherry proportion adding intensity. Beneath the sherry, the familiar Highland Park heather smoke and a gentle maritime saltiness. Complex and inviting.

Palate

Full and sherried — dark fruit, chocolate, a robust oak spice. The 80% first-fill sherry cask proportion gives Dark Origins a depth of sherry character that the standard range cannot match. Mid-palate brings roasted nut, a gentle smokiness and a satisfying warmth. At 46.8%, excellent presence.

Finish

Long, with dark sherry and heather smoke interweaving in a rich, sustained fade.

Highland Park Dark Origins was created to showcase the darker, sherried side of Highland Park's character. Where the standard range uses a blend of first-fill and refill sherry casks alongside bourbon barrels, Dark Origins increases the proportion of first-fill sherry casks to approximately 80%, dramatically intensifying the sherry influence. The result is a richer, darker, more intensely fruity Highland Park.

The additional first-fill sherry makes a significant difference. Dark Origins has a depth of dried fruit, chocolate and spice that the standard 12 Year Old hints at but cannot fully deliver. The Orkney heather peat is still present — it always is in Highland Park — but it plays a more subtle role beneath the assertive sherry influence, adding a gentle smokiness that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying.

Dark Origins is an excellent expression for drinkers who love Highland Park's unique character — the combination of heather peat and sherry — but want more of the sherry. The increased first-fill proportion adds intensity and richness, and the 46.8% bottling strength gives the flavours room to express themselves. At its price, it offers genuine value for a sherry-forward island malt of real quality and character.
