Tasting Notes

Nose

Green pear, lime zest, fresh herbs, green melon and a subtle smoulder of peat.

Palate

Crisp pear, mint, kiwi, vanilla cream, soft barley and a gentle earthy smoke.

Finish

Refreshing and clean with lingering green fruit and a quiet peaty echo.

First Impressions

Like its Yamazaki sibling, Hakushu Distiller's Reserve was launched by Shinji Fukuyo in 2014 to relieve pressure on aged stock.

Distillery & Heritage

Drawn from American oak and lightly peated Hakushu malt aged in the cool mountain warehouses of Yamanashi prefecture, the Distiller's Reserve is built around younger, livelier spirit. It is the whisky Suntory itself recommends for the perfect Hakushu Highball.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose is unmistakably Hakushu — green pear, mint, lime, herbs. The palate is crisp and refreshing with vanilla sweetness underneath, and the smoke arrives gently on the back palate.

Verdict

An outstanding everyday Japanese single malt.
