First Impressions
Glenrothes 12 — part of the Soleo Collection launched 2018. Founded 1878 in Rothes, long the secret backbone of Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse blends. 'Soleo' references the traditional sherry-making sun-drying process for grapes.
The Sherry Commitment
Matured in Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, and bourbon casks. Natural colour, non-chill filtered. Edrington (also owners of Macallan and Highland Park) acquired sole ownership in 2017. 40%.
Tasting
Honey and melon nose with vanilla and walnut. Soft, creamy palate of nut brittle, vanilla bean, and light cinnamon. Long, sweet finish with Galia melon and sugary glaze. Fruit-forward and approachable.
The Verdict
Glenrothes 12 earns a 7 — a solid, approachable sherried Speyside at £38. Not overly complex, but the fruit-forward character and creamy mouthfeel make it an excellent aperitif whisky. The secret backbone of some of Scotland's most famous blends, finally visible.
