First Impressions
Glenrothes 12 relaunched the core range in 2018 as the opening statement of the Soleo Collection, the first age-stated line from the distillery matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned oak casks.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded in 1879 on Burnside of Rothes in Speyside, The Glenrothes has long been a quiet backbone of blended Scotch, most famously in Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse. Historically released as vintages rather than age statements, the distillery pivoted in 2018 under Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion, naming the new range Soleo after the Spanish system of sun-drying grapes used to make sherry. Every cask in the Soleo Collection is bodega-seasoned Iberian oak.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose leads with the signature Glenrothes vanilla and cinnamon, joined by ripe banana, melon and a curl of orange peel. The palate is softly sweet — vanilla, spiced pear, toffee and dried orange — with oak appearing late. The finish is medium and clean.
Verdict
At its price point, Glenrothes 12 is a smart sherried Speysider: approachable, consistent, and unmistakably house-style.
