Tasting Notes

Nose

Dark cherry, strawberry, milk chocolate, mint chocolate, dried figs, apricot, honey, sandalwood, nutmeg, tangerine peel — the port influence rich and inviting

Palate

Rich and full-bodied — milk chocolate, strawberries, apricot, tobacco leaf, ginger spice, orange citrus, walnut — the port adding velvety sweetness without cloying

Finish

Medium to long — cocoa powder, orange zest, pepper, leather, drying oak, a savoury herbal note — a dessert whisky in the best sense

First Impressions

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 — 'quinta ruban' means 'ruby port' in Gaelic. Part of Dr Bill Lumsden's Extra Matured range at Glenmorangie. Lumsden is widely regarded as a pioneer of cask finishing in Scotch whisky, and the Quinta Ruban is his richest creation.

The Port Pipe Finish

Aged 10 years in ex-bourbon casks through Scotland's tallest stills (5.14m / 16ft 10in — only the lightest vapours reach the top), then a further 2+ years in ruby port pipes from Portugal's Douro Valley. Relaunched in 2019 with a 14-year age statement, replacing the previous 12 Year Old. Non-chill filtered at 46%.

Tasting

Dark cherry and milk chocolate nose with dried figs and tangerine. Rich palate of strawberries, apricot, and tobacco leaf with ginger spice. The port adds velvety sweetness without cloying. The finish brings cocoa powder, orange zest, and leather. A dessert whisky in the best sense.

The Verdict

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 earns an 8 — outstanding value for a 14-year port-finished Highland malt. At £45, it's Dr Bill Lumsden's most generous creation: rich, full-bodied, and perfect after dinner. The tall stills create an elegant spirit that takes the port finish beautifully.
