I am giving the Glenmorangie 25 Year Old Altus an 8.5 out of 10. It is an accomplished, beautifully composed single malt that justifies its place in the upper echelons of the Glenmorangie range. The only reason I hold back from a higher score is the 43% ABV — at this price, even 46% non-chill filtered would have pushed this into genuinely exceptional territory. But that is a quibble with what remains an outstanding whisky.

Neat, at room temperature, in a proper Glencairn glass. If you must, a few drops of still water will open things up, but I would suggest spending your first pour without any addition at all. A whisky that has had 25 years to develop deserves at least twenty minutes of your undivided attention. This is an after-dinner dram — give it the evening it has earned.
