The Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Reserva — sometimes labelled simply Gran Reserva — is the distillery's longstanding rum-finished expression, and one of the earliest mainstream uses of Caribbean rum casks in Scotch whisky maturation. The whisky spends most of its life in traditional oak casks before being transferred for a finishing period of around four months into casks that previously held rum, a step which Glenfiddich's malt master at the time, David Stewart, helped to pioneer in the wider industry.

Stewart's instinct for cask finishing has been one of the defining contributions to modern Speyside whisky-making, and the Reserva is among its most enduring expressions. Twenty-one years in oak gives the underlying spirit ample time to develop depth and weight, while the rum finish adds a layer of tropical sweetness that flatters Glenfiddich's already fruit-forward character without disguising it.

The nose opens with toffee, banana bread and crystallised ginger, a warm note of spiced molasses sitting behind. The palate is generous with brown sugar, ripe pineapple and vanilla custard, lifted by a faint black pepper warmth from the rum wood. At 40% the texture is soft rather than muscular, but the long maturation gives it a quiet authority. The finish is long, sweet-spiced and gently oaked, fading into a soft tropical close.

It remains one of the more graceful rum-finished Scotches on the market — neither overly sweet nor confected, and clearly the product of long thought rather than passing fashion. A worthy memorial to David Stewart's quiet innovations.
