It loses half a mark for the 40% ABV; I would love to see what this liquid could do at 43% or 46%, where the texture would have room to breathe. Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes in the glass. If you find the sweetness a touch forward, add a small splash of cool water — no more than a teaspoon — to open up the malt character underneath. This is also a first-rate Highball whisky: tall glass, plenty of ice, good soda water, and a strip of lemon peel. On a warm afternoon, few Speyside malts perform better in that format than Glenfiddich 12.
