Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich peat, vanilla, dark fruit. The chinquapin oak adds a distinctive sweetness to the heavy peat — nuttier and spicier than standard American oak. Beneath the smoke, honey, dried cherry and a gentle warmth. Unusual and compelling.

Palate

Heavily peated and richly oaked — smoke, chinquapin sweetness, dark fruit. The rare oak variety adds a flavour dimension beyond standard bourbon or sherry maturation. Mid-palate brings roasted nut, dark chocolate and a robust warmth. At 50%, excellent body.

Finish

Long, with peat smoke and chinquapin sweetness sustaining together.

Meikle Tòir — meaning 'great pursuit' — is GlenAllachie's heavily peated expression, representing the first peated whisky the distillery has released. The Chinquapin One is matured in casks made from American chinquapin oak — a rare oak species that grows in the southeastern United States and imparts a nuttier, spicier character than standard American white oak.

The combination of heavy peat and chinquapin oak is novel and effective. The rare oak adds a distinctive sweetness and spice that complements the smoke in unexpected ways. Billy Walker's wood expertise — honed over decades at BenRiach and GlenDronach — is evident in the selection of this unusual cask type.

GlenAllachie Meikle Tòir represents an exciting new direction for a distillery that has already established itself as one of Speyside's most interesting producers. The combination of heavy peat and innovative wood management promises a peated whisky with genuine distinctiveness as the stocks mature.
