Tasting Notes

Nose

Stewed strawberry, blackcurrant, cocoa and a soft Speyside maltiness running underneath.

Finish

Medium long, gently tannic, with red fruit and a dry oak grip.

GlenAllachie's wine cask finish range is one of the clearest expressions of Billy Walker's cask philosophy at the distillery. After acquiring GlenAllachie from Chivas Brothers in 2017, Walker inherited a substantial inventory of mature stock and began an aggressive programme of re-racking into more interesting woods. The 13 Year Old Rioja Wine Cask Finish is one of the results.

The whisky is matured initially in traditional casks before being transferred for a finishing period in casks that previously held Rioja, the tempranillo-based Spanish red. Bottling is at 48%, without chill-filtration or added colour, in line with the distillery's standard practice.

Rioja is a forgiving wood for whisky finishing. It tends to push red fruit and a soft, slightly herbal sweetness into the spirit without bringing the heavy tannic load that can come from younger French oak finishes. Here it sits well over the GlenAllachie distillate, which carries enough malty weight to stand up to the wine influence without being smothered by it.

It is one of the gentler entries in GlenAllachie's wine-cask line, less aggressive than some of the Walker bottlings and more obviously food-friendly. For drinkers curious about what wine cask finishing can do to a Speysider without resorting to high strength, this is a useful and well-judged example.
