Sixteen is an unusual age statement in Scotland, and Glen Moray has bottled one for years without making much noise about it. Distilled on the banks of the River Lossie at Elgin, the 16 Year Old is a reminder that not every Speysider needs to raise its voice to be heard.

At the standard 40% ABV this is a restrained dram, unmistakably of the bourbon-cask school and untroubled by sherry or port or any of the fashionable finishes. The nose is clean and straightforward — malted cereal first, then vanilla, green apple and a soft thread of light honey. Anyone who has spent time with old-style Speyside will recognise the register immediately.

On the palate the whisky is light-bodied and sweet, orchard fruit carrying the malt along, with mild oak gathering at the edges. It lacks the grip of a higher-strength bottling but compensates with composure; nothing is out of place, nothing is overdone. The finish is short to medium, gently sweet, with only the faintest trace of white pepper to remind you there is spirit underneath.

Glen Moray has always taken a pragmatic view of its role — supplying good Speyside malt at fair prices without pretending to be a boutique. The 16 Year Old is a fair representative of that tradition: an age-statement whisky priced honestly, bottled simply, and meant to be drunk without fuss. For the man who wants a daily Speysider rather than a talking point, it is hard to fault.
