Fuji Single Malt represents the malt whisky side of the Fuji Gotemba Distillery's versatile production. While the distillery is perhaps better known for its grain whisky — produced using a unique multi-still setup — the single malt demonstrates that Kirin's mastery extends to pot still distillation as well. The whisky is matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and sherry casks, with the high-altitude location (600 metres) providing a cool, clean maturation environment.
The spirit is characterised by an elegance and fruit-forward character that reflects the Japanese approach to whisky-making — precision, balance, and an attention to detail that borders on the obsessive. The stone fruit notes — peach, apricot — are genuine spirit character rather than cask-derived, and the maturation adds complementary sweetness and structure without imposing its own narrative.
Fuji Single Malt is a welcome addition to the Japanese whisky market, offering quality and character at a price that the major distilleries — facing severe supply constraints — increasingly cannot. The Mount Fuji provenance adds romance, but the liquid needs no embellishment. This is a well-made, elegant single malt from a distillery with decades of experience and a depth of technical knowledge that few can match. Japanese whisky at its most understated and refined.
