Tasting Notes

Nose

Lemon sherbet, vanilla, banana bread, fresh barley and a touch of coconut.

Palate

Bright and malty — green apple, pear drops, honey, soft vanilla and creamy oak.

Finish

Medium, clean and gently spiced with lingering citrus and barley sugar.

First Impressions

Filey Bay Flagship is the everyday expression from Yorkshire's first single malt distillery. Matured in a combination of first-fill bourbon and STR red wine casks, bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered and natural colour.

Distillery & Heritage

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery sits at Hunmanby Grange, a working farm just inland from Filey Bay on the North Yorkshire coast. Founders Tom Mellor and David Thompson grow their own barley on the farm and malt much of it nearby. The distillery launched its first whisky in 2019 — Yorkshire's first ever single malt.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The spirit is bright, fruity and unmistakably barley-forward, reflecting the field-to-bottle ethos. The bourbon casks lead while the STR finish adds a soft strawberry-jam sweetness.

Verdict

A confident, characterful flagship and one of the most exciting young English distilleries.
