First Impressions

The Fettercairn 12 is the rebooted entry-level expression in a range that was quietly relaunched by owners Whyte & Mackay in 2018, with a striking new unicorn-branded livery and a renewed focus on the distillery's unique production quirks. Matured primarily in American oak ex-bourbon casks, it's a showcase for Fettercairn's signature tropical-fruit-and-toffee profile.

Distillery & Heritage

Founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay of Fasque, Fettercairn sits at the foot of the Cairngorms in the village of the same name in the Mearns of Aberdeenshire. Its most famous feature is found on top of the stills: Fettercairn is the only Scotch distillery to use external cooling rings on its still necks, continuously trickling cold spring water down the outside of the copper during distillation. This promotes maximum reflux, returning heavier compounds to the pot and allowing only the lightest, fruitiest vapours to climb over — hence the distillery's uncommonly tropical character. Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose leaps out of the glass with tropical fruit — pineapple, mango, a squeeze of orange peel — followed by toffee, milk chocolate and toasted almond. The palate is sweet and creamy: more pineapple and mango, butterscotch, honey and a gentle ginger warmth wrapped in soft Highland malt. The finish is medium length with lingering tropical fruit, caramel and a nutty oak note drying things out.

Verdict

The 2018 relaunch was the making of modern Fettercairn, and the 12 is the best illustration of why. It's distinctive, approachable and unmistakably a product of those cooling-ring stills — a Highland dram with a genuinely unusual fingerprint.
