Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla, caramel, nut, oak — sweet and light at first, intensifying with time in the glass, the 94 proof adding aromatic warmth

Palate

Earthy and leathery — toasted seasoned old oak, dry and warm with a slight bite, vanilla and sandalwood, cardamom, crisp caramel, the charred oak pioneer's legacy in every sip

Finish

Warm and oaky — slight smoke, spice, the oak char that Reverend Craig supposedly invented lingering as the final note

First Impressions

Reverend Elijah Craig is credited as the first to age whiskey in charred oak barrels — the foundation of bourbon as we know it. Heaven Hill's Small Batch honours that legacy with a 78/12/10 mashbill at 94 proof. The 12-year age statement was removed in 2016, but the quality remains.

Tasting

The nose is vanilla, caramel, and oak. On the palate at 47%, earthy with toasted oak, cardamom, and crisp caramel. The finish is warm and oaky with smoke.

The Verdict

Elijah Craig Small Batch earns an 8 — the charred oak pioneer's bourbon. Solid, agreeable, and excellent value. At £28, the father of bourbon's legacy at a fair price.
