Tasting Notes

Nose

Intense peat, bonfire smoke, maritime salt. The Islay identity is immediate and uncompromising. Beneath the smoke, vanilla, a gentle citrus sweetness and a briny freshness. Complex and layered despite the apparent simplicity.

Palate

Smoky and maritime — peat, brine, a gentle malty sweetness. The blend of Islay malts creates a composite portrait of the island's peated character. Mid-palate brings smoked honey, dark chocolate and a gentle warmth. Well-balanced for its peat intensity.

Finish

Long, with Islay peat and maritime character sustaining satisfyingly.

Elements of Islay is a series from Elixir Distillers (the company behind the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Port Askaig) that celebrates Islay's whisky character through blended malts and single cask releases. The Peat expression is a blended malt drawn from multiple Islay distilleries, designed to capture the essence of the island's smoky character in a single accessible bottle.

The blend is assembled with expertise, combining malts from different Islay distilleries to create a whisky that represents the island rather than any single producer. The peat is intense but balanced, the maritime character authentic, and the underlying malt provides enough sweetness to prevent the smoke from becoming monotonous. At 45%, it has good body without the aggression of cask-strength Islay.

Elements of Islay Peat is an excellent introduction to Islay for peat-curious drinkers, and a satisfying everyday pour for those already converted. The blending creates a more rounded, balanced peat experience than many single distillery bottlings, and the price makes it accessible. For the price of a good Islay malt, you get the whole island in a glass.
