Tasting Notes

Nose

Toffee, honey, leather — the ten years of oak adding depth, sweet mashed corn, caramel, citrus, the Mashbill #1 character immediately recognisable

Palate

Light and delicate — sweet caramel and honey mixed with vanilla, dark fruit, woody oak, minty rye, bold oaky dryness, almonds, rich cocoa, the single barrel selection adding individual personality

Finish

Warm and oaky — cocoa and almond lingering, the ten years of age providing a smooth, satisfying close, an elevated daily dram

First Impressions

Eagle Rare — from Buffalo Trace, the distillery that produces Pappy Van Winkle, Blanton's, and its own flagship — uses the lower-rye Mashbill #1. Aged no less than ten years, every barrel is discriminately selected. The bourbon that went from shelf staple to allocated cult bottle.

Tasting

The nose is toffee, honey, and leather. On the palate at 45%, light and delicate with caramel, dark fruit, oak, and cocoa. The finish is warm and oaky with almond.

The Verdict

Eagle Rare 10 earns an 8 — an elevated daily dram from Pappy's distillery. The ten years of age provide depth the flagship Buffalo Trace doesn't achieve. At £35, exceptional value if you can find it.
