First Impressions
Big Peat is one of the most beloved Islay blended malts in the world. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered and natural colour, the label features the cartoon fisherman Big Peat — a weathered Islay character who has become a brand icon.
Distillery & Heritage
Launched in 2009 as the flagship of Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts range, Big Peat blends single malts from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and — remarkably — the closed legendary distillery Port Ellen. That a closed-distillery component features in a £40 bottle is part of Big Peat's enduring appeal.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is a coastal bonfire — heavy peat smoke, sea spray, iodine, lemon zest, tar ropes and smoked fish. The palate is powerful and oily, delivering Islay peat in spades along with brine, black pepper, lemon oil and a vanilla sweetness that keeps it balanced. The finish is long, smoky, ashy and coastal.
Verdict
An absolute Islay classic. Big Peat captures the essence of the island in a single bottle and remains unbeatable value for peat lovers.
