Tasting Notes

Nose

Zesty sweetness, soft orange, earthy moss, greenhouse warmth — opens to green apple, lemon meringue, kiwi, pineapple, then vanilla, honey, sultanas from the cognac

Palate

Rich, buttery texture — floral notes, sweet barley sugar over crisp green apples, vanilla shortbread, oily mouthfeel, good tannin tingle, stewed apple character

Finish

Long and warm — sandalwood and lingering dried fruit, the cognac influence adding a final flourish of French elegance

First Impressions

Deanston 18 — named The Whisky Exchange's Whisky of the Year 2022. From the cotton mill distillery in Doune, converted from a 1785 mill designed by Sir Richard Arkwright. The hydro-electric turbine on the River Teith still powers the entire distillery.

The Cognac Finish

Matured in ex-bourbon casks with a cognac cask finish. Non-chill filtered, no colour added, 46.3%. The cognac adds a French elegance to the Highland character — vanilla, honey, and sultanas layered over the distillery's signature butterscotch and green apple.

Tasting

Zesty nose opening to green apple, kiwi, and cognac-influenced vanilla. Rich, buttery palate with floral notes, barley sugar, and vanilla shortbread. Long, warm finish with sandalwood and dried fruit. An elegant, balanced dram.

The Verdict

Deanston 18 earns an 8.5 — a deserving Whisky of the Year with genuine charm and balance. At £80 for an 18-year-old at 46.3% non-chill-filtered, exceptional value. The cognac finish adds dimension the 12 Year Old only hints at. The cotton mill's finest hour.
