Tasting Notes

Nose

Honey, malt, a gentle vanilla warmth. The non-chill-filtered presentation preserves the spirit's natural oils. Beneath the honey, dried apple, cereal and a gentle warmth. Clean and unmanipulated.

Palate

Malty and honeyed — barley, honey, a gentle oak warmth. The 46.3% and non-chill-filtration give the whisky more body and flavour than many twelve-year-olds at 40%. Mid-palate brings a gentle spice and a biscuity cereal depth. Honest.

Finish

Medium, with malt and a gentle warmth.

Deanston 12 Year Old is bottled un-chill-filtered at 46.3% — a presentation that preserves the natural oils and flavour compounds that chill filtration removes. The distillery, housed in a converted cotton mill beside the River Teith in Perthshire, uses organic barley and draws its water from the river.

The non-chill-filtered presentation is key. At 46.3%, the natural oils give the whisky a richer mouthfeel and more flavour than the typical chill-filtered 40% Highland malt. The organic barley and clean Perthshire water contribute a distinctive cereal purity.

Deanston 12 is an honest, well-made Highland malt that benefits enormously from its non-chill-filtered presentation. The extra body and flavour that the oils provide transform what might otherwise be a modest twelve-year-old into something genuinely satisfying. Excellent value for an un-chill-filtered organic single malt.
