First Impressions
Released in 2015, Winter's Gold is one of the more unusual concepts in Diageo's Highland stable — a malt deliberately crafted to be served chilled from the freezer.
Distillery & Heritage
Sitting 326 metres above sea level in the central Highlands, Dalwhinnie is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland and routinely the coldest weather station in the country. Founded in 1897. Winter's Gold leans into that heritage with a NAS bottling at 43% designed to retain its silky texture even when poured ice-cold.
Tasting Notes in Detail
At room temperature the nose is classic Dalwhinnie — heather honey, vanilla, soft pear, beeswax. The palate is creamy and gentle. Straight from the freezer, the texture turns properly oily and the honey concentrates beautifully.
Verdict
The freezer-serve gimmick actually works.
