Tasting Notes

Nose

Lightly floral and restrained, with subtle butter, nut, and fruit notes.

Palate

Toffee, tart cherry, blueberry preserves, bittersweet chocolate, salted almond butter, marmalade, and baked clove.

Finish

Exceptionally long yet gentle — dark chocolate cake and raspberry ganache arriving late.

King Alexander III is the Dalmore at its most extravagant. Named after the thirteenth-century Scottish king whose life was saved by an ancestor of the Mackenzie clan — the stag emblem on every Dalmore bottle commemorates that rescue — this is a no-age-statement single malt matured across six different cask types. It is, in effect, a showcase of everything Dalmore's cask programme can do.

The six woods are: ex-bourbon barrels, Matusalem oloroso sherry butts, Port pipes, Madeira barrels, Marsala casks, and Cabernet Sauvignon casks. Each contributes a different register of flavour — the bourbon brings vanilla and oak, the oloroso adds dried fruit, the Port contributes berry sweetness, the Madeira offers nuttiness, the Marsala adds caramel, and the Cabernet Sauvignon provides tannic structure. At 40%, the challenge is integrating all six without losing coherence.

The nose is lightly floral and restrained — perhaps surprisingly so given the complexity beneath. The palate is where the six casks announce themselves: toffee, tart cherry, blueberry preserves, bittersweet chocolate, salted almond butter, marmalade, baked clove, and overripe raspberry. It is a rich, multi-layered experience that rewards slow sipping.

The finish is exceptionally long yet gentle, with dark chocolate cake and raspberry ganache arriving late. At 40%, it lacks the structure that a higher strength would provide — a persistent criticism of the Dalmore range — but the length and complexity of the finish compensate. King Alexander III is Dalmore's most ambitious expression, and ambition, at least, is not something it lacks.
