Tasting Notes

Nose

Stewed pear, cold apple pie, apricot, toffee sweetness, melon — rugged undertone of raw peanuts, salt, burnt toast

Palate

White pepper and ginger up front, then caramel, malt, fresh lactic notes — sweet fruit layered with smoky bacon, toasted nuts, oak

Finish

Long — grilled pineapple, caramel, touch of smoke, citrus pith, 'freshly washed wool' — the worm tub character throughout

First Impressions

Craigellachie 13 — the entry point to Speyside's meatiest distillery. Worm tub condensers, 46%, non-chill filtered. A Dewar's blending malt given its own identity by Bacardi in 2014.

Tasting

Stewed pear and toffee nose. Peppery palate with caramel and smoky bacon. Long finish with grilled pineapple. The Goldilocks dram — just right.

The Verdict

Craigellachie 13 earns a 7.5 — the entry point to a cult distillery at £42. The meaty, sulphury character from worm tubs divides opinion, but if it clicks for you, nothing else tastes like this. Goldilocks approved.
