Tasting Notes

Nose

Honeyed malt, marzipan, red apple, orange peel, vanilla custard and a soft floral lift.

Palate

Creamy and biscuity — toffee, stewed apple, candied citrus, almond, gentle red berry from the STR casks.

Finish

Medium length, malty and warming, with marmalade and oak spice.

First Impressions

The Cotswolds Distillery's flagship Signature was the first English single malt produced in the Cotswolds.

Distillery & Heritage

Founded in 2014 by former New York hedge fund manager Daniel Szor in Stourton, Warwickshire, Cotswolds Distillery championed local Odyssey barley grown within sight of the stillhouse. Consultant Dr Jim Swan — the same engineer behind Kavalan — designed the maturation regime, pairing first-fill ex-bourbon with STR ex-red wine barriques.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose is classically English in its restraint — honeyed cereal, red apple, marzipan and a suggestion of wildflower honey. The palate is creamier than expected, with vanilla custard, stewed orchard fruit and a glow of red berry and cinnamon from the STR component.

Verdict

One of the most accomplished young English whiskies on the market.
